New Delhi: Veteran Hollywood actor John Amos has passed away at the age of 84 due to natural causes, as per Variety. The actor, who is known for his roles in Good Time and Roots, died on August 21 in Los Angeles. Amos’ publicist, Belinda Foster, confirmed the news of his death on Tuesday, October 1.
His son Kelly Christopher Amos confirmed the death of his father and said in a statement with “heartfelt sadness” that his father has “transitioned”, adding, “He was a man with the kindest heart and a heart of gold… and he has loved the world over. Many fans consider him their TV father. He lived a good life.”

Veteran actor John Amos passed away at the age of 84 in Los Angeles. Giving a tribute to his legacy, the actor’s son Kelly added in the statement that his legacy will live on in his outstanding work in films and television. He further added, “My father loved working as an actor throughout his entire life…. most recently in Suits LA playing himself and our documentary about his life journey as an actor, America’s Dad. He was my dad, my best friend, and my hero. Thank you for your prayers and support at this time.”

John Amos shot to fame with the role of weatherman Gordon ‘Gordy’ Howard on The Mary Tyler Moore Show in 1970. He is also known for CBS’ Good Times, which is a spinoff of Maude and All in the Family. He also received Emmy nominations in 1977 for his role as adult Kunta Kinte in the ABC miniseries Roots. He went on to appear in shows such as The West Wing, About the Andersons, Two and a Half Men and The Ranch. His last role will be seen in the forthcoming series, Suits LA.
He has also featured in Eddie Murphy’s Coming to America and its sequel Coming 2 America, The Beatmaster, Die Hard 2, Lock Up and Me Tyme. Amos and his son also produced an upcoming documentary on the actor titled America’s Dad.
