Hyderabad eye hospital told to pay Rs 1.5 lakh as compensation after man loses vision

The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission noted that the initial hospital failed to perform necessary tests, leading to Butchaiah’s vision loss, which greatly affected his life. They ordered the hospital and doctors to make the payment within 45 days, with an interest rate of 9 per cent applied if the payment is delayed.

Hyderabad: The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission in Nalgonda has directed an eye hospital in Hyderabad and two doctors to pay Rs 1.50 lakh, including Rs 1 lakh as compensation, for negligent treatment of a patient’s eye.

In 2021, Kukudala Butchaiah, a retired employee of Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TGSRTC), was sent to Sree Netralaya Eye Hospital after being diagnosed with cataracts. After the surgery, he experienced persistent water discharge from his right eye. The hospital reassured him that this was a common issue for older patients.

Another clinic highlights problem

To seek another opinion, Butchaiah visited a different clinic, where doctors confirmed that water discharge after cataract surgery was unusual. However, the clinic declined to treat him because they had not performed the initial surgery, as reported by the New Indian Express.

Butchaiah then returned to Sree Netralaya, where another doctor performed a different procedure called Re-Dsek-Ka, but he continued to have problems. Eventually, he was referred to LV Prasad Eye Institute, where doctors diagnosed him with a serious infection known as pseudomonas and recommended another surgery.

Patient loses vision in right eye

Later, doctors informed him that he had lost all vision in his right eye and could no longer perceive light. The doctors further asked him to have annual check-ups for his left eye, which was also at risk.

The Commission noted that the initial hospital failed to perform necessary tests, leading to Butchaiah’s vision loss, which greatly affected his life. They ordered the hospital and doctors to make the payment within 45 days, with an interest rate of 9 per cent applied if the payment is delayed.

LV Prasad Eye Hospital doctor dies in road accident

In a separate incident, a 29-year-old doctor working with LV Prasad Eye Hospital in Hyderabad died in a road accident on Monday on the Outer Ring Road (ORR) area. The deceased was identified as Dr Nilay Reddy. He worked as Cornea and Anterior Segment Fellow at the hospital. He was going towards Hyderabad Airport from his house in Jubilee Hills when the accident took place, the police said.
