Mounting academic stress engulfs NLU Delhi; Three students found dead in one month

Two 20-year-old law students were found dead in separate incidents this week, marking the third student suicide in a month. Their tragic deaths have sparked discussions about the increasing mental health pressures faced by students in legal studies.

New Delhi: In a heartbreaking turn of events, two young law students, both just 20 years old, were found dead in unrelated incidents this week marking the third case of suicide in just one month. Their deaths have ignited a conversation around the mounting mental health pressures faced by students pursuing law.

It is worth mentioning that in just one month, three students at the National Law University Delhi tragically lost their lives, raising serious concerns about student welfare on campus. The deaths have ignited a broader conversation on critical issues such as academic pressure, caste-based discrimination, and mental health challenges that students at the institution face.

Third year law student commits suicide in her hostel room

As per the reported information, the first tragedy took place on Tuesday afternoon, when a third-year law student from the National Law University (NLU), Delhi, was discovered lifeless in her hostel room. Originally from Chennai, the student had been struggling with severe academic stress, as revealed by the police. However, the suicide note found at the scene indicated that she did not blame anyone for her decision.

Investigators have revealed that the young woman had previously confided in her roommates about her distress back in April. Her roommates, concerned for her well-being, informed her family, who brought her home to Chennai for a short break.

Meanwhile, the National Law University released a statement expressing their sorrow over the incident and offering their condolences to the student’s grieving family. The university also reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the mental well-being of its students, stating that all possible measures had been taken to help her.

The student’s family, devastated by the loss, collected her body after a post-mortem examination. A relative disclosed that she had been feeling particularly low in the days leading up to her death, though the family had hoped her situation would improve.

Fresher aspirants found dead in Laxmi Nagar PG

Meanwhile in a separate incident, just days later, another aspiring law student from Haryana was found dead in his paying guest accommodation in Laxmi Nagar on Thursday. The young man had recently cleared the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) and was preparing to join NLU to embark on his legal career.

When the student failed to answer phone calls, the owner of the PG contacted his family. After receiving no response, they broke into his room, where they found him unresponsive. Police suspect that he died by suicide, likely due to nitrogen gas inhalation.

“There were no signs of a struggle, and the room’s air conditioner was on when we arrived,” said Apoorva Gupta, Deputy Commissioner of Police (East District). “It appears to be a case of suicide, though investigations are still underway.”
