The Government of Nation Capital Territory has decided to declare 7th November 2024 as Public Holiday on account of ‘Chhat Pooja’.

New Delhi: November 7 will be a public holiday in the national capital on account of ‘Chhath Pooja”. Lieutenant Governor, VK Saxena wrote letter in this regard to CM Atishi, who approved the proposal. Atishi wrote a letter to Chief Secretary to issue a notification declaring the holiday.

The letter of Chief Minister read, “Chhath Pooja is an important festival for the people of national capital territory (NCT). Accordingly, the Government of NCT of Delhi has decided to declare 7th November 2024 as Public Holiday on account of ‘Chhat Pooja’. During the festival a large number of people come at the bank of Yamuna river for performing rituals which include taking a holy dip in the Yamuna River.

Yamuna pollution concerns devotees

Ahead of the festival, the rising levels of pollution in Yamuna water has raised health concern among the people. A large amount of froth is visible in many parts of the river. As per a report by ANI, a resident said, “After looking at the level of pollution we will have to think upon whether is it even possible to perform Chhath Pooja rituals here. All governments focus only on their votebank and not the actual issues due to which people have to face all these. Chhath Pooja is an important festival and how will people celebrate in these conditions?”As per some reports, the Delhi Jal Board has been trying to remove froth from the water by spraying chemicals into the Yamuna water since last week.
