Ottawa: A 19-year-old Sikh woman, who was found dead inside a walk-in oven at the Walmart store in Canada’s Halifax city, has been identified as Gursimran Kaur. According to several media reports, Kaur’s mother was the one who found her daughter’s body after searching for almost an hour since Kaur went missing.
Halifax Regional Police (HRP) say they received an emergency call informing them about a sudden death at the Walmart at 6990 Mumford Road around 9.30 pm on Saturday. The Maritime Sikh Society has confirmed that Kaur was a member of their community.
“It’s very sad for us, for her family as well, because she came for a better future and she lost her life,” Anmolpreet Singh of the the Maritime Sikh Society told PTI.

Walmart has said that Kaur and her mother had moved to Canada from India about two years ago, and mother and daughter were both working at outlet together. While the police are carrying out a probe into the mishap, the store has remained closed since Saturday night after the incident.
“We understand the public is involved, and we just wanted to encourage the public to be patient with our investigation and be mindful that there are family members and coworkers involved,” said Halifax police.
While the Nova Scotia’s medical examiner is working to find out the exact cause of the death, the Halifax Department of Health and Safety has also been made part of the probe.
What are Walk-in ovens?
Walk-in ovens, also known as cabinet or batch ovens, are used for curing, drying or baking in large amount using wheeled racks or carts to transfer the items needed to be baked. Such ovens are mostly found in large bakeries deliveries food items in large quantities such as supermarkets.
In a statement, Walmart Canada said the company is heartbroken and their thoughts are with the woman’s family.
