Chennai: In a significant development, the coaches for the first driverless trains of the Chennai Metro Phase II project arrived in Chennai today. The three-coach trains, manufactured in Sri City, reached the Poontamalli depot via the outer ring road, marking a major milestone in the project’s progress.
The coaches were individually packed and left Sri City on Wednesday, and their arrival in Chennai heralds the beginning of a new era in the city’s metro services. With the Chennai Metro planning to start services from Poontamalli to Borur next year, the arrival of these coaches is a crucial step towards achieving this goal.
Driverless Trains to Roll Out Soon: Coaches for Chennai Metro Phase II Arrive
The driverless trains are designed to carry approximately 1,000 passengers per trip and are equipped with advanced features to ensure a safe and comfortable journey. The trains will undergo extensive testing, including inspections of brakes, heating, ventilation, air conditioning, lighting, and pantograph systems, to ensure they meet the highest standards.
The Rs 63,246-crore Chennai Metro Phase II project will cover 118.9 km and will have three lines. The OMR will serve as the hub for the second phase, replacing Alandur, which was the hub for the first phase. The project’s completion is expected to significantly enhance the city’s public transportation system.
Construction of the Chennai Borur Metro Station has reached its final stage, and Metro 2 works on OMR road are expected to be completed by 2027. The 20-km stretch from Madhavaram to Sipkot and the 45.4 km stretch from Madhavaram to Choshinganallur are nearing completion.
Once operational, the Chennai Metro Phase II will provide seamless connectivity to residents, with stations including Nehru Nagar, Kanthanjavadi, Perungudi, Thoraipakkam, Mettukuppam, PTC Colony, Okkiyampet, Karapakkam, Okkyam Thoraipakkam, Cholinganallur, and Sirusheri.
The arrival of the driverless train coaches is a testament to the project’s progress and the city’s commitment to providing world-class public transportation. With testing set to begin soon, Chennai is one step closer to experiencing the benefits of its expanded metro network.
