Will AI replace the 80 per cent of Software Engineering jobs? A latest report by Gartner suggested this.
80% Of Software Engineering Jobs Are In Danger Due To AI?
Artificial Intelligence (AI) killing jobs has been a constant fear as we see the trend of AI growing across all spectrums of life. While writing, proofreading, sales and customer services, web developers, and a lot of other jobs are already on the stake of getting replaced by AI in the near future. Another crucial job role is of software engineer which is also at risk.
As per a recent report from global research company Gartner, up to 80 per cent of engineering software need to upgrade their skills by 2027 amid the rise of AI. What does it mean? Philip Walsh, Sr Principal Analyst at Gartner claimed that the growing advancement in AI can be led to reduce the demand for human engineers or even replace them entirely. Hence, to be relevant in this constantly growing AI era, software engineers need to be relevant.
Still, it is suggested that human expertise and creativity will always remain the core of software engineering to be able to create innovative softwares.
Impact Of AI On Software Engineering Jobs
According to Gartner analysts, AI can affect software engineering jobs in three different phases: Short-term, Medium-term, and long-term.
To understand in simple words, know that in the short term impact, it will be like a benefits by AI to the software engineers, providing some essential boost. However, as they move towards the medium term and AI evolves, software developers will be able to automate more tasks with the help of AI. While the long-term phase will be all about highly skilled software engineers developing AI-powered apps to automate most of the work.
This will begin a new era of AI engineers. This simply means that AI may not kill the jobs but rather create a new kind of job while replacing the traditional setup of software engineers.
According to a Gartner study, there is a significant skills gap in applying AI and ML to real-world situations. This difference suggests the importance of engineers adapting to AI advancements. By 2027, 80% of software engineers will need to enhance their skills or risk falling behind, as AI becomes an essential part of software development.
