Coimbatore Bharatiyar University PhD student petitions Governor Ravi over exploitation, mismanagement | Tamil Nadu News

Tamil Nadu News

The petition outlines several concerns, including exploitation of research students by professors, who allegedly use them for personal tasks such as childcare, household chores, and bank errands. Furthermore, students are forced to spend between Rs 50,000 to Rs 1 lakh to submit their research papers, a practice Prakash claims is widespread across universities.

Coimbatore: In an unprecedented move, a PhD student from Coimbatore’s Bharatiyar University, Prakash, submitted a petition to Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi during the 39th convocation ceremony, highlighting various grievances faced by research students.

Governor Ravi and Higher Education Minister Kovi Chezhiyan were attending the ceremony as special guests, awarding degrees to students. Prakash, pursuing a PhD in English, seized the opportunity to bring attention to the issues plaguing the university.

‘Professors use us as personal servant’, Bharatiyar University PhD student’s shocking allegations

Speaking to the media, Prakash apologized for the unconventional approach but felt compelled to act, citing a lack of alternative avenues. “I didn’t know any other way, so I filed a complaint with the governor,” he said.

Prakash also highlighted the mismanagement of university hostels, particularly those allocated for Adi Dravidian students. Despite government funding, these hostels are allegedly used as public hostels, denying benefits to intended beneficiaries.

Additionally, Prakash raised questions about the university’s maintenance and utilization of funds. He cited the example of the Camper hostel’s poorly built toilets, despite an annual allocation of ₹1 crore for hostel maintenance. Similarly, the Shekjhar hostel’s condition is questionable.

The university’s sports facilities also came under scrutiny, with Prakash alleging that grounds are rented to private individuals on weekends, denying access to temporary teachers and students. Moreover, the university has not conducted a sports day in five years, despite collecting funds.

Prakash’s bold move has brought attention to the need for improved governance and accountability within the institution. The university’s administration has yet to respond to the allegations.

Governor Ravi has received the petition, and it remains to be seen how the matter will be addressed. The incident has sparked concerns about the welfare of research students and the management of educational institutions in Tamil Nadu.
