Bengaluru: The Bengaluru Airport City Limited (BACL), a part of the Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL), has started the construction work of the much anticipated Business Park. The biz park spans whopping 2 million square feet, as per the statement issued by the BIAL on Monday.
This project aligns with Karnataka’s new Global Capability Centres (GCC) policy for 2024-2029. The goal is to make Bengaluru a major global center for GCCs, create 350,000 jobs, and add $50 billion to the state’s economy.
Bengaluru Airport City’s Business Park: Location, size, facilities
The Business Park will occupy 17.7 acres inside the Bengaluru Airport City and will have four blocks that will include business parks, education and health districts, research facilities, and various entertainment and hospitality options. Rao Munukutla, the Executive Director and CEO of BACL, shared the update highlighted Bengaluru’s significant role in the GCC sector. At present, the city hosts 36 per cent of India’s GCC workforce across industries such as IT, biotechnology, automotive, and aerospace.
To improve connectivity, a new Airport West metro station will also be built near the Business Park. This station will connect to Bengaluru’s city center, providing quicker and greener travel options. Future plans for the airport city also include India’s first Concert Arena within an airport setting and a Convention & Exhibition Centre.
GCC policy
In addition, the Karnataka Government introduced a draft GCC Policy on September 27, aiming to attract 500 new GCCs by 2029. This initiative makes Karnataka the first state in India to create a specific framework for this sector. GCCs are branches of multinational companies that manage support tasks like back-office operations, IT support, and customer service. Many big companies also use GCCs as centers of excellence.
A report from property consultancy CBRE shows that Bengaluru led the office leasing market for GCCs between 2022 and the first half of 2024, accounting for 40% of the total 53 million square feet leased across the top six Indian cities during that period.
